BELLE ISLE NATURE CENTER | ANIMAL HABITAT IMPROVEMENTS | DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Higley is currently serving as Construction Manager at Risk for Animal Habitat Improvements to the Belle Isle Nature Center. This project includes an addition to the building to serve as a bird watching area, seven new exhibits, new finishes in the lobby as well as the conference room, and various upgrades to the buildings MEP systems. The three exhibits housing Rat Snakes, Garter Snakes, and Bullfrogs were constructed using radius steel in the corridor of the circular building.
The remaining exhibits housing Mudpuppies, Water Snakes, Tiger Salamanders, and Tree Frogs were constructed by partially demoing existing block walls and forming tanks using glazing, masonry, and steel studs. The largest of the tanks, Mudpuppy, is roughly 600 gallons. Each exhibit is finished with themed shotcrete, individual heating, exhaust fans, and water filtration. The Tree Frog exhibit features a tunnel with three domes for children to crawl through and pop up inside the exhibit with the frogs.
